Scarlet Tanager

Sitting on a park bench
A flash of brilliant crimson
caught my eyes
a scarlet tanager
It moved around
the maple tree
seemingly on a mission
so beautiful
wonderous
why do we say, people
are like animals
when they BOMB
and INCINERATE each other?
animals have never
acted with such violence
as our human culture
our cultural violence
is not because
we are like animals
it is because
we have removed ourselves
from being animal
from being human
it is when we
separate ourselves
from nature
from our wild animal
from our authentic humanness
that we can
collectively murder people
in a genocide
and have no feelings
for that atrocity.
